A Classic, Neutral Fall 10×10: Pieces

October 6, 2017

I’m so excited to be joining Lee of Style Bee and Caroline of Un-fancy (and Andrea of Seasons + Salt, Paige of Style This Life, Jaana of This Mom’s Gonna Snap, Allison of The Thoughtful Closet and so many more) in the Fall 10×10 remix.  If you’re unfamiliar with a 10×10, it’s basically this:  Pick 10 pieces to wear for 10 days.  It’s a fun way to test styling and versatility, try new combos, and practice living with less.  Gym and lounge wear don’t count, and neither do accessories.  Some people treat shoes or outerwear like accessories.  “Rules” can be flexible!  Please feel free to join in by using the hashtag #fall10x10 on Instagram!

Inspiration:

This time around, I wanted to go for a super classic, neutral set of pieces.  (I was super inspired by Lee’s Summer 10×10).  Nothing here screams super trendy or original, but I love all these items individually, and it’s just what I’m gravitating toward right now.  (Full disclosure:  I watched When Harry Met Sally for the millionth time recently, so I’m very much feeling a straight leg jean, a cool turtleneck, and an oversized blazer.)  The check blazer and chelsea boots really signify fall to me, but I’m also still in a transitional climate phase where I still need some warm weather options.

My goals for this Fall 10×10 are:
  • Embrace the spirit of fall while also being practical.

Here in LA, I’m looking at temps likely to be in the 70s, so outerwear is a big maybe, but I also want to be cozy when my office AC is raging.  I might have a couple rainy days, so I’m keeping a rain jacket handy as an “accessory.”  I have a few very autumnal pieces mixed in with some basics.

  • Create a foolproof light packing list.

I love creating packing lists–it’s a bonus part of any trip–and I tend to look at 10×10 exercises as practice packing.  But this round, I really wanted to see if I could come up with something that totally would work for a 10-day city trip without changing much.  So I’m keeping footwear to 2 pairs, and including a lot of comfortable pieces.

  • Find ways to wear my ponte pants.

As much as I love these puppies, I have really struggled to feel comfortable in them everyday, and I want to practice styling them.

  • Find ways to wear my rib knit dress for everyday.

I adore this dress for parties and dates, but I’m skittish about wearing it more casually.  I’m absolutely a pants person, but I want to get a tiny bit out of my comfort zone and get a bit more mileage out of this dress.  (I also included it because I’m expecting some warmer days).

  • Have a relaxed attitude about accessories.

On some 10x10s I’ve participated in, I’ve been so concerned with trying to make each outfit unique, that I’ve thrown every accessory I own into the mix, and it’s not the most realistic set of outfits for me.  In real life, I tend to be pretty minimal, so I’m going to let myself off the hook in the versatility category and just try to dress in outfits I like.  I have a nice pool of accessories (below) to draw from, but I’m just going to look at them as options.  No pressure.

Here are my 10 pieces:

WEDGIE JEANS – Levi’s Waterless, made from USA denim with water-saving efforts // I couldn’t not include these.  I always feel great and super modern in them.

TURTLENECK/CARDIGAN – Vetta, eco-friendly and made in USA // I struggled with weather to include this, because it’s so versatile that it feels almost like a cheat for a challenge like this.  But ultimately, it’s a beautiful piece of clothing that I’ve invested in and love to wear, so why wouldn’t I get as much use out if as I can?  Check out my glowing review of this sweater here!

WHITE TEE – Everlane, made responsibly // A lighter option for warm days.

PONTE PANTS – Brass Clothing, made responsibly // Super comfy and high-quality, but I’ve been such a casual dresser for so long that I’ve sort of forgotten how to wear black pants (and skinny silhouettes).  I’m hoping I can start working these into the mix.

CHAMBRAY SHIRT – H&M Conscious, made from sustainable Tencel (similar) // This has become one of my favorite tops, and it’s pretty lightweight despite being a “fall staple,” so it’s perfect for warm weather.

STRIPED TEE – Everlane, made responsibly // This may end up be a mistake to include, being heavyweight fabric and long sleeved, but I wanted to give it a shot, since I love it so much.

RIB KNIT DRESS – Everlane, made responsibly // My biggest challenge to style for everyday.

CHECK BLAZER – Steven Alan, secondhand (similar made in USA, similar eco-friendly, similar vintage) // A check blazer feels very vintage and very of-the-moment, so I want to get some wear out this!

CHELSEA BOOTS – Loeffler Randall, old (similar made responsibly) // I’m having these repaired just in time for this 10×10!  They had a hole worn through the inner toe area, and it was my first experience with a cobbler, but so much wiser and wallet-friendly than buying new boots.

SNEAKERS – Veja, eco-friendly // A comfortable and more casual alternative to boots.

I just realized these are all additions to my closet that I made after making a commitment to shop more ethically.  It’s very cool to see that it’s been a while since I turned to fast fashion, and I now have a collection of high-quality investments that will take me far into the future.  Now, if I can just brush up on my styling chops!

Speaking of which, here are some accessories that I’ll pull from to put together outfits–just loose suggestions!  If I were packing, I’d limit these items significantly.

satchel – Cambridge Supply Co., handmade in UK // rain coat – RAINS, responsibly made // bandana – Only Child Clothing, made in USA // sunnies – Ray-Ban // lipstick – Glossier, made in USA // tote – Everlane, made responsibly // glasses – Warby Parker, old (similar) // necklace – vintage (similar, made in USA) // snapback – Brixton (similar made in USA) // 100% Human Pin – Everlane, with tee purchase; acrobat pin – Shana Torok, made in USA // mini purse – Baggu, made in USA // beanie – Bridge & Burn, made in USA

I’ll be sharing outfits from my #Fall10x10 over the next 2 weeks, both here and on Instagram.  If you’re interested, I have some previous 10×10 round-ups back over here.

I love all your outfit pieces Lo. Looking forward to seeing them put together on Instagram. I also found a checkered blazer secondhand from the 90s and excited to put that to good use. Have a good one! xo

    Lo,
Great choices! I almost included my Brass ponte pants too. I agree that they’re so well-made and comfortable (and flattering), but can be hard to wear without feeling a little self-conscious. I love your mix of safe items and challenge items and your realistic take on the challenge!
    xo,

Thanks, it seems to be my MO in life to mix up safe and risks, so I hope it’s a nice balance for this challenge! Can’t wait to see your looks!

I’m curious to see how you style the Brass pants! I’ve been eyeing them for awhile, but I’m not sure how useful they would be for my lifestyle. Also, can I just say you do an excellent job of creating your concepts? Does that make sense? In other words, when I looked at your inspiration board, I was like yup! That’s totally Lo! When I do the same thing, my final product never looks like the concept I was going for! 😂

I’m curious, too! Lol. It’ll be an interesting challenge. And thank you! I’m definitely a Pinterest addict, although I know some things I pin are more fantasy and some things are more realistic.
